Culture : Greeting!

A Thai greeting
In Thailand people do not normally say 'good morning', 'good afternoon', 'good evening' or 'good night'. They greet each other with the word Sawadee, and instead of shaking hands, they put their palms together in a prayer-like gesture and bow slightly. It is customary for the younger or lower in status to begin the greeting. When taking leave, the same word and procedure is repeated. This gesture is called a Wai. If you are greeted with a Wai you should reply with the same gesture, though it is not necessary to return a Wai to a child. Think of a Wai as you would a handshake. Initiate a Wai because of sincere pleasure at an introduction. You will not cause offence if you Wai inappropriately in Thailand, but you may create confusion. Don't return a Wai from waiting staff, drivers or other help. You might hope to strike a blow for equality, but will in fact cause embarrassment. A Wai to your teacher (any kind of teacher) is definately appropriate; any smiles you receive in return are of appreciation.

A British Greeting
The British do shake hands, i.e. when first introduced to new people, but we rarely shake hands when parting.
In an informal situation you may see social kissing (often just a peck on the cheek), this is acceptable between men and women and also between women who know each other very well, but it is rare that you will see two British men kissing, even if it is only on the cheek.

Katy Perry to come up with TV show

London, Aug 31 (IANS) Singer Katy Perry is set to launch her own reality show and is said to be in talks with ITV2 channel. 'ITV have been trying to sign Katy for ages. They think that she is brilliant for the channel, a real bull's eye,' dailystar.co.uk quoted a source as saying. Katy made her television debut with the current season of 'The X Factor', where she shares the dais with music mogul Simon Cowell and Louis Walsh. 'Katy loved every minute of it and is very interested in expanding her TV experience. She loves meeting new people and because Russell is from England, she wants to make an especially good impression,' said the source. The singer is also lending her voice for an upcoming movie 'The Smurfs'.

Santisuk is gone

The police monkey, once part of a security team in Pattani's Sai Buri district, has died in a dog attack. PARES LOHASANTSai Buri is a district of Pattini, one of Thailand’s troubled southernmost provinces. It has been the scene of frequent clashes between insurgents and security forces.It was not a place where you would think police would bring smiles to the resident’s faces, but there was one such “officer” who did.The officer’s name was Santisuk Promdao who worked at a police checkpoint in Sai Buri. Everyone could see that Santisuk was different. In fact, Santisuk was a monkey, a macaque adopted and trained by Pol L/C Yutthapol Promdao.Dressed in a blazer with the words ‘‘Monkey Police’’, Santisuk brought smiles to motorists who passed by.Santisuk became famous enough for a French broadcasting to ask for an “interview”.That is what brought Santisuk and Pol L/C Yutthapol to Songkhla last Friday night. The police officer first chained Santisuk at the car park of a tutorial school he was attending.Before long, he realised something was wrong.‘‘I heard dogs barking but I didn’t pay attention at first,’’ he said.‘‘They kept barking and that’s when I felt something was wrong. I rushed down and saw Santisuk collapse. I took him to hospital but it was too late.’’Santisuk had succumbed to injuries sustained in an attack by three dogs.On Sunday, Pol L/C Yutthapol and eight other police officers bade a last farewell to the popular macaque.Santisuk was dressed in a police uniform and wrapped in a white cloth before being laid to rest at a police operation base in Sai Buri.
